A new coach and a sick pig

As I mentioned in my last post, I have some exciting news… Starting in two weeks, I will be receiving online programming from Alanna Casey! For those of you who don’t know, Alanna is one of the strongest women in the world. She was trained by Jill Mills for a long time and competes in the same weight category as me in strongwoman, only she is about twice as strong as me. Not even exaggerating.

I have been following Alanna for about 18 months. She is sponsored by Lift Big Eat Big. Last year, she won the World’s Most Powerful Woman title (my first competition was the national qualifier for that event) and she also won the Arnold this year.

This is the first time Alanna has offered online training, and I feel very lucky to be one of only two clients she is taking on. I am actually doing a powerlifting-style program with her rather than a strongman-based program as my weaknesses mainly lie in strength events such as deadlifts, squats and overhead pressing. I have at least six months until my next competition, so plenty of time to make some huge gains!

In other news, I was sicker than I’ve been in years this past weekend. I had planned a big night out on Saturday with my lovely strongwoman friend Meg, but after two drinks I was vomiting. I’d like to think I’m not that much of a lightweight, so I think it may have been food poisoning.

In the space of an hour, I threw up six times (in public, might I add!). I was up most of the night being sick and was sick most of yesterday and this morning as well. Needless to say, the max squat attempt I had planned for tonight is not happening! Screw you, body.

Anyway, on to last week’s workouts!

Monday – Squats
Squats: 20kg x 10, 10, 40kg x 5, 60kg x 5, 72.5kg x 3, 85kg x 2 x 8
Paused squats: 60kg x 5 x 3
Straight-leg deadlifts: 60kg x 8 x 5
Bent over dumbbell rows: 16.5kg x 12 x 4
Superset with banded low rows: 10 x 4

My squat is finally feeling good. I’m pissed that I’m not going for a new PR tonight! I’m hoping to do it next Monday instead, although I am going paintballing on Sunday so might be too battered and bruised for that. FML.

After squats, I broke into the stash of chocolate I picked up in the American food aisle of Tesco. OMG. This is why I couldn’t live in America.

Wednesday – Pressing
Log press: 30kg x 8, 35kg x 5, 40kg x 5, 45kg x 2, 47kg x 1, 2, 1, 1, 1, F, F
Z press: 25kg x 8, 8, 30kg x 4
Band dips: 8, 4, 4
Rope pushdown: 30kg x 15, 35kg x 12 x 3
Cable curls: 30kg x 12 x 4
Kneeling cable crunches: 60kg x 15 x 4
Rotator cuff work

This was the worst session I’ve had in a very long time. I was supposed to do 47kg for eight sets of two, but clearly that didn’t happen. All my other sets at 85 per cent felt good – difficult, but it didn’t feel like I was going to fail any of my reps.

When I failed the second rep of the third set of my log press, I decided to drop back to singles – but even that didn’t go well and I had to admit defeat. I have no idea what was going on! I’m going to chalk it up to having a bad day and hope that it doesn’t psych me out when I attempt my max this Wednesday.

I’m nervously excited to test my deadlift max this Thursday. I’ve just got to keep thinking of that sweet post-workout burger and milkshake!

Friday – Bench

I never train three days in a row, but I had no choice as I was busy all weekend. It’s lucky I did, given I was sick anyway! At least I didn’t fail any reps of my bench press. They have scribbled new warning signs all over the safety bars at my gym, which greatly amused me.

On Friday night, I went to the Underground Film Club at the Vaults near Waterloo station. The movie of choice was Reservoir Dogs and it was an awesome environment to watch it in. The film club is running until December 20 – I highly recommend it to other Londoners!

Saturday was spent dancing and being awfully sick. On Sunday I went shopping with the girls but it was not exactly pleasurable as I could have sworn that I was dying. It took me 40 minutes to walk the usual 20 minute route home and then I spent the evening feeling sorry for myself in my new minion pyjamas.
